New Laws in Iraq

As shown in the BIG FACTS, here are some of the new powers granted to Prime Minister Allawi of Iraq and voted in by the three-man Presidential Council, made of of the Prime Minister and two Vice-Presidents:

1. Officials are allowed to conduct search operations.
2. Prime Minister Allawi may impose martial law.
3. Prime Minister Allawi has the right to impose curfews.
4. Curfews will be imposed with unanimous OK from Presidential Council.
5. Prime Minister Allawi has the right to detain individuals with weapons.
6. Individuals with weapons can be detained with Presidential Council's OK.
7. Prime Minister Allawi has the right to assign governors to areas of Iraq.
8. Prime Minister Allawi is empowered to freeze the assets of suspects.
9. Prime Minister Allawi can monitor suspects' communications.

BIG QUESTION: Are we creating yet another tin god dictator in yet another underdeveloped nation who will one day - yet again - turn on us?
