Start 'em young

Reported by Chrish - July 7, 2004 -

In a patriotic pro-military story on FNL July 5, Steve Brown reported that some people were objecting to the Minnesota Twins promotional give-away of G.I. Joe dolls in "honor" of Armed Forces Appreciation Day.

Mothers Against Military Madness and Friends for a Non-Violent World were among the groups protesting what they saw as a glorification, rather than an appreciation, of soldiering, and the targeting of young children as recipients. No rally took place; they merely objected.
According to Steve, "the 'plan' backfired." A rally was held after all, but by people supporting the give-away, and vendors are lining up to sponsor the promotion next year.

Comment: He didn't say "nyah nyah", but it was implied that those anti-war folks got what they had coming to them. He also did not explore the disconnect between the "family values" population we claim to be and the endorsement of chldren being trained up in war. We despair at the Middle-eastern children throwing rocks and holding guns as big as they are, but we are doing the same thing here, albeit more subtly.
