Lies, Damn Lies, and Statistics

Reported by Judy - July 2, 2004 -

The cliche about "lies, damn lies, and statistics" was borne out today (July 2, 8:32 a.m. EDT), on Fox and Friends in a discussion on monthly job statistics, showing 112,000 jobs had been created during June.

Fox News business correspondant Stuart Varney admitted that the figure was only half of what was expected, but that nearly 1.3 million jobs had been added in the last 16 weeks.

Asked if that meant Bush had created more jobs than he lost (not in those words, of course), Varney explained that there are two ways to measure jobs -- the government survey John Kerry quotes which says 2 million jobs were lost under Bush, and the Labor Department's household survey which shows Bush has created 1 million jobs.

Which statistic does Varney favor? "I can honestly say the most accurate way to measure is to use the household survey" which favors Bush.

Gee, what a surprise.
