Let Fox Pick Kerry's VP?

Reported by Judy - July 1, 2004 -

Weekly Standard editor William Kristol made an outrageous statement today on Fox and Friends, in effect urging the network to force Sen. John Kerry to pick Senator Hillary Clinton as his running mate. (July 1, 8:19 a.m. EDT)

In the midst of all his excitement over Saddam's court appearance, co-host Steve Doocy asked Kristol about "the rumor that Hillary Clinton may be close to getting the vice presidfential nod from Senator Kerry."

In response, Kristol trotted out the GOP conspiracy theory that the Clintons don't want Kerry to pick John Edwards as his running mate because that would mean Kerry would win and Edwards would have the best shot at getting the nomination eight years from now, denying the nomination to Senator Clinton. "I wonder if this rumor hasn't been floated by the Clintons," said Kristol, without having to furnish any proof at all.

He went on to say that the Republicans could force the selection of Senator Clinton by forcing (my word) Dick Cheney off the ticket and picking Condi Rice to replace him. He said he'd be "outraged for the next month and you guys would bge outraged, too" if the Democrats, the party of women's rights, didn't put a woman on the ticket. (He forgets the Dems already did that once, with Geraldine Ferraro.)

Then, most outrageous of all, Kristol told the Fox and Friends co-hosts, "You guys need to make this happen." Makes one wonder what he meant by that.

Co-host E.D. Hill immediately tried to do her part, chortling that she'd love to see a debate between Senator Clinton and Rice. "I'd do anything to see that," she said. Guess she thinks Rice wouldn't be afraid to debate, even though she was afraid to appear in front of the 9/11 commission in public.
