A Child's View

Reported by Marie Therese - June 25, 2004 -

On June 22, 2004, Mattie Stepanek, age 13, died of complications resulting from muscular dystrophy. On the same day Larry King rebroadcast his last interview with the diminutive bestselling poet and "peacemaker".

In the dark moral morass our government and the world finds itself, Mattie's simplicity and clarity shine through like a beacon.

Excerpted from Larry King Live first broadcast 9/2/02:

"....(A) heartsong is your inner message. It's your inner beauty. It's what you are meant to do in life.

My heartsong is to help others hear theirs again.

And all heartsongs are different and unique and beautiful.

And even though similarities are good, it's the differences that make them special and we should never try to force our heartsongs on others or have all the same heartsong.

And, it's sad that people are fighting over who's heartsong is better, 'cause they're all different and beautiful."

LARRY KING: When you look at the world now and your thoughts of changing this through habit and the like, and then you look at the Arabs and the Israelis and the United States and Iraq, don't you think it's all so large?

MATTIE STEPANEK: The world?

LARRY KING: Yeah. I mean, it's so above us, decisions are being made by people who are not gonna change habits.

MATTIE STEPANEK: Right. And we are made by one thing. And who cares what it's called. Some people call God Buddha, Allah, Yahweh. All the different names are all beautiful, unique and that is what "whatever the God is" wanted it. But, "whatever the God is" didn't want us fighting over what we call it.

LARRY KING: Do you think anyone's born bad?

MATTIE STEPANEK: No.
