Down Playing Disaster

Reported by Judy - June 24, 2004 -

Fox News was heavy into damage control through its coverage of the widespread attacks in Iraq on June 24. Throughout the morning, its reporters and show hosts stressed that the attacks were no surprise.

For example, at 8:16 a.m. EDT, Fox and Friends co-host Steve Doocy referred to the coordinated attacks in five Iraqi cities, saying, "We knew this was coming." On Fox News Live at 9:01 a.m., Jon Scott cast the attacks as "perhaps a sign of desperation by the terrorists" in advance of the June 30 handover of "power" to the Iraqis. Again at 9:49 a.m., Scott discussed the violence in Iraq that was occurring "as we were warned" in advance of the June 30 transition.

All these asides were a way to divert attention away from the scope and seriousness of the attacks -- 69 Iraqis dead and three U.S. soldiers. Since the Bushies told us it was coming, it's not a big deal and they really are on top of things.

Disasters are OK, as long as they're predicted?
