McAuliffe: We're Eight Points Up!

Reported by Melanie - June 23, 2004 -

Things didn't seem to be going to Neil Cavuto's liking today during his Your World show in an interview with Democratic National Committee Chairman Terry McAuliffe and Republican National Committee Chairman Ed Gillespie.

The three discussed the state of the US economy, expressing opinions along predictable party lines. At the very end, Terry McAuliffe said "...that's why we're eight points up in the Washington Post/ABC poll last night."

At that second, Fox went to a split screen with all three men shown separately. Neil Cavuto was looking down, as if reading, and waiving his right arm, as if to say stop that! At that point Cavuto thanked his two guests and the segment ended.

COMMENT: I got the distinct impression that Cavuto was quite irritated that this piece of bad Bush news went out to his viewers.

NOTE: We Newshounds have long had questions about Fox polls, prepared by Fox News/Opinion Dynamics. The results are often suspiciously different from polls conducted by other news outlets or polling companies and the results are overwhelmingly in favor of Bush. Additionally, poll results from other outlets are rarely mentioned on Fox, so it could have come as a real shock to some Fox viewers to hear the "eight points up" statement.
