Jon Wants a Better Case

Reported by Eleanor - June 22, 2004 -

When Jon Stewart interviewed Stephen Hayes, author of "The Connection," on the Daily Show (June 21, 11:00 pm ET), he thoroughly questioned the premise of Hayes book, that there is a connection between Al Qaeda and Iraq, as well as questions about the standards for a "war on terror."

In this program, Jon was more serious and open than usual in expressing his opinions. He said, "Everyone has lost sight of what's really going on with the right and left refuting each other. Bush started a new doctrine of pre-emption. With a new doctrine, you must be sure of yourself if it sets a standard." Hayes replied, "The new standard is to go after terrorists." Stewart came back with, "For developing WMD? Supporting and harboring terrorists? That's a problem if you're talking about war. Iran does the same thing."

Stewart continued, "It's frustrating to see partisans go back and forth, when the issue is credibility. If I'm a dictator, how do I know if America will attack me if I don't know what the standard will be?" Then he cited a laundry list of countries that fit the standard of supporting terrorists. "We're going to be busy as little bees. I'm no pacifist and no partisan, but every time I read a book that shows "evidence," it shows more evidence about other countries" (than it shows for Iraq). We had an attack by 15 Saudis, and haven't done anything to them. Make a better case."

Comment: Go Jon!! This doesn't sound like "fake news" to me.
