Fox Ignores Favorable Kerry Poll Again

Reported by Ellen - June 22, 2004 -

A new Washington Post-ABC News poll (www.washingtonpost.com, free with registration) has a lot of bad news for George W. Bush. Once again, Foxnews.com ignores the news it probably wishes would go away.

Some excerpts from the Washington Post article by Richard Morin and Dan Balz:

*Public anxiety over mounting casualties in Iraq and doubts about long-term consequences of the war continue to rise and have helped erase President Bush's once-formidable advantage over Sen. John F. Kerry concerning who is best able to deal with terrorist threats... Today the country is evenly divided, with 48 percent preferring Kerry and 47 percent favoring Bush.

*Fewer than half of those surveyed - 47 percent - say the war in Iraq was worth fighting, while 52 percent say it was not, the highest level of disapproval recorded in Post-ABC News polls.

A search of the Foxnews.com site for this story yields only a poll from last Friday in which reporter Dana Blanton appears to be trying to showcase the numbers in the light most favorable to Bush. Poll: Bush, Kerry Still Closely Matched

Note these exceprts:

"President Bush is seen as the candidate best suited to handle terrorism and national crises, while Democrat John Kerry tops Bush on handling domestic issues such as health care and Social Security." (Lead paragraph. Note no mention that the economy is a domestic issue)

"The poll finds optimism about the nation's economy... 53% believe it is recovering, up from 45 percent in late March..."

"'A belief in a strong national economy is crucial to the reelection chances of an incumbent president, and this year is no exception,' notes Opinion Dynamics Corporation Senior Account Executive Lawrence Shiman. 'The increase in the percentage of the public saying the economy is improving is a positive development for the president.'"

Buried much further down in the piece:

In battleground states, Kerry beats Bush by 43 to 40%;

The economy is considered the most important issue for the federal government to address today;

Those polled think John Kerry would do a better job than Bush on the economy(44-41%);

The Democratic Party (40% to 36%) has a better vision for the future of the country.
