"As Westerners"

Reported by Melanie - June 22, 2004 -

Immediately prior to the start of today's Dayside w/Linda Vester, the news broke that the South Korean man abducted in Iraq on June 17, Kim Sun-Il, had been beheaded. After a live report from reporter Kelly Wright in Baghdad, Vester turned to Rita Katz, Director of the SITE Institute, who was on the phone.

Ms. Katz spoke for a minute or two about hate groups operating in Iraq and then said, about the beheading: "This really intimidates us, as Westerners."

COMMENT: This is a racist statement if ever I've heard one. I am quite certain human beings around the world are intimidated by beheadings, not just "Westerners." The implication here is that we're the only ones "civilized" enough to be disturbed by the act, which I think is an outrageous thing to imply, and it perpetuates the "we're better than they are" notion which is, unfortunately, rampant here in the US.
