Fox's Women

Reported by Judy - June 2, 2004 -

At 9:25 a.m. EDT on June 2, 2004, Fox News put women in their place, especially Democratic ones. Democrat Stephanie Herseth won the U.S. House seat vacated by Republican Bill Janklow after his conviction for vehicular manslaughter. Jon Scott gave the Democratic victory a brief mention, apparently so he could spend more time on the new Miss Universe.

At 9:50 a.m., Scott enthusiastically reported that Miss Australia won the crown and that she "loves to surf and camp."

While making sure viewers knew that essential information, Scott did not bother to mention that Ms. Herseth's victory was the second victory for Democrats in an open House seat this year (the other was in Kentucky). Nor did he mention, as did The New York Times, that the pickup of a seat allows Democrats to cut into the already slim GOP margin in the U.S. House. Apparently, a woman winning an election that has national significance is less newsworthy than a woman winning a contest based primarily on appearance.
