Asman: "It's the Democrat's fault"

Reported by Melanie - May 19, 2004 -

On Fox News Live w/David Asman, Asman says, "It's the Democrat's fault.... The President says it's [high gas prices] all the Democrats' fault."

No. Bush didn't say that.

On May 19, 2004 at approximately noon ET, video was released of President Bush speaking to reporters and taking two questions after a cabinet meeting at the White House. Bush complained that "the Congress" hasn't passed his "energy plan," submitted to it three years ago. Bush reiterated several times that "the Congress" needs to act and insinuated that we wouldn't be in a pickle with high gas prices today if it'd done so.

At 12:37 p.m. ET, in a discussion with Frank Porabelli and Bob Beckel, Fox News host David Asman summed up Bush's statement saying: "The President says it's all the Democrats' fault."

Both houses of Congress are dominated by Republicans. For Asman to say "the President says it's all the Democrats' fault" is not only an incorrect paraphrase of what the President said, it's also far from accurate or informative in terms of who (Republicans) controls what's brought before the Congress for a vote and who is "at fault" for the fact that the President's "energy plan" hasn't been passed.
