The homophobic hate group's accusation, that Christian family values Fox News is "going gay," is certainly not supported by Fox's recent propaganda blast against a "landmark" California law which was crafted to protect transgender students from bullying and discrimination. Starting with Greg Gutfeld's mockery of the bill, Fox had four additional shows in which the hosts expressed absolute disdain for the law and, in so doing, students who benefit from it. Bathrooms were an integral part of the discussion. And now that the Christian right is whining about this law, Fox is burnishing its Christian family values creds even more by validating their concerns. This morning, Steve Doocy hosted a CA assemblyman Tim Donnelly, a wall of genius who has said that God wants us to have guns and that the new transgender rights law ensures "the right to be ogled." Steve Doocy provided warm affirmation for Donnelly's call for the bill to be repealed because, you know, it's all about, you know, sneaking peeks in bathrooms.
Nothing irks the gang on the curvy couch more than "political correctness" which forces good Christians to say Happy Holidays and prevents good conservatives from using funny racial and homphobic slurs. So in keeping with this loathing of sensitivity, Fox & Friends, again, used their oh, so clever "PC" Police graphic and blaring sound effect as their opening. MENSA member (just joking) Steve Doocy offered the standard Fox intro which defines any culture war issue as controversial: "A brand new law is stirring controversy this morning." He reported that CA Gov. Jerry Brown signed, into law, a bill that will give students the right to choose - wait for it - bathrooms, as well as sports. He noted that supporters say that while it will decrease bullying, "which is always good," his guest "predicts that it will be a recipe for disaster" and as such, he is pulling one of his kids out of public school. (Awww).
After doing his patented summation of the situation, by describing how Donnelly "sat down with his two boys," Doocy asked about their concerns. Donnelly said his 13 year old has a "horrified look on his face" and said "seriously, dad, it's the stupidest idea I've ever heard." Doocy chuckled. He added that they "expressed real concern about [wait for it] using the bathroom with a girl in the next stall." (Is it the sound of a girl peeing that gets them excited? Help me out here!) Donnelly ranted about how teen bodies are going through "incredible physiological, hormonal changes, it's a very confusing time, and you're uncomfortable with yourself." (The same thing applies, even more, to transgender kids) He continued with the bathroom obsesssion: "The idea of using the rest rooms or taking a shower...and being naked in front of someone you might want to ask out..." Doocy chuckled, grinned, and said "yeah."
Doocy explained that Donnelly is only taking one kid out of public school while waiting to see if the bill gets repealed before he does anything with the second. Donnelly said that "there is tsunami of discontent" about the bill which is inspiring opponents to push for a referendum. As the chyron read "Helping or Hurting [oh, it's hurting, right?] Critics: Bill Invades Student Privacy," Donnelly spoke about how this law affects only a small percentage of students who identify as transgender but have "no medical diagnosis." (So they're lying?)
Doocy noted that Donnelly says that the state is violating the rights of 98% of students. Donnelly responded with something jawdroppingly offensive and Orwellian when he asked how "if you're not comfortable, how is it a solution to make the other 98% share that same intense discomfort." (Wow, way to blame the transgender community for the ignorance and bigotry coming from his side!) After saying that the solution is to have private bathrooms for the transgender students, he asserted that he "would have loved to have had a private bathroom when I was in high school." Doocy guffawed and said "you're not alone." When Donnelly said that although this arrangement has worked in LA and San Francisco, it won't work elsewhere, Doocy, who sent his kids to Catholic schools, remarked that "now they're changing it for all the kids in the name of stopping bullying" and in so doing validated the religious right meme that anti-bullying programs are part of the "gay agenda."
So beyond the validation for "concerns" articulated by anti-LGBT extremists - concerns that take the form of obsession about bathrooms (big in the discussion about the end of Don't Ask, Don't Tell) the big take away from this piece is that both Steve Doocy and State Assemblyman Tim Donnelly had some serious bathroom and body image issues of their own. Perhaps they were raised to think that body functions were shameful. Perhaps they were bullied. But if they were bullied, their opposition to this law is really despicable.
As for the story itself, I’m sick of Fox News’ obsession with this. It’s yet more hate speech masked as concerned. It seems like that’s all they can do since the Trayvon verdict, and the best they can do is make it out like a joke later.
I don’t know or care what type of bathrooms these ass-clowns frequent, but most people I know try to seriously limit the time they ‘hang-out’ in a public bathroom. (Sorry for the bad pun!)
Do they really believe that transgender are constantly going to change their choice based on which bathroom may currently have the ‘hottest’ occupants?
If there is a god, he should be smiting these morons.
